STATEMENT: Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib on Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s Illegal Arrest and Deportation

At the same time that Trump is making life harder for everyone with higher costs and misguided tariff wars, he’s engaging in illegal and inhumane deportations and arrests of immigrants

DENVER – Coloradans and Americans are concerned about making sure our immigration system is safe for all involved: people coming to America to build a better life and for those who already call this country home. And, a large majority of Americans also agree that Trump’s economic policies are hurting the people who already call this country home. On all these issues, the majority of Coloradans agree: Donald Trump has gone too far

The recent actions by the Trump administration deporting people to El Salvador, against court orders, are horrifying to the majority of Americans, as well: 61 percent of Americans have expressed opposition to the deportations to El Salvador. Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s deportation and detention, among others, is a wake-up call for all Coloradans who care about the rule of law.

“Courts have insisted that the Trump Administration facilitate the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia who was illegally deported to El Salvador. They are not following the court’s order at the same time that they’re jacking up costs on everything from food to electronics with tariff wars that hurt everyone across the state,” said Shad Murib, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party. “The Trump Administration is thumbing their nose at the courts to conduct illegal and inhumane immigration policies at the same time that they’re making life hard for citizens: everyone is a target in Trump’s America. Unless you’re a billionaire, the message this administration is sending is that you don’t matter. It’s time for every Coloradan – Republican, Democrat, and unaffiliated – to put the rule of law and a better life for working people ahead of petty politics.”

El Paso County Democratic Party Condemns Government Response to Colorado Springs Raid; Affirms Commitment to Defending Due Process

The public statements released by Mayor Yemi Mobolade and the El Paso County Board of Commissioners failed their constituents by refusing to call for restraint, compassion, or due process for the very residents they represent.

At a time when U.S. residents are being wrongly detained by ICE and subjected to brutal confinement conditions in detention centers both in the U.S. and in countries like El Salvador, it is especially shocking to see our city and county governments publicly praise rogue police forces that are bypassing constitutional rights. Instead of standing up for the rights and dignity of the very residents they were elected to serve—including citizens who may have voted for them—they chose complicity.

Residents, including U.S. citizens, are at real risk of wrongful detention, deportation, and imprisonment—or worse. Their actions early Sunday morning showed a blatant disregard for the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, and their public use of dehumanizing language against county residents of Latino, Hispanic, and Indigenous descent demands condemnation.

We stand in solidarity with local and state immigration rights groups who have called attention to these abuses and who continue to fight for human dignity, constitutional rights, and true public safety for all members of our community. The El Paso County Democratic Party is currently engaged in consultations to determine how we can best support ongoing legal efforts to defend due process and protect the rights and safety of all our residents.
