About Us

El Paso County Democratic Party Platform

As Adopted in 2022

General and Miscellaneous

Civil Liberties

  • We support the recognition of housing as a human right.

Economy

  • Terms of service and end-user license agreements in Colorado should be in clear and simple language, and users of said agreements may not be restricted from bringing lawsuits, either individually or as a class. We also support federal legislation to the same effect.
  • We support a tax requirement that taxpayers who gross one million dollars or more per year must pay a minimum of 15% of their income in federal tax regardless of any other deductions or credits.

Education

  • We support a statewide Collective Bargaining law to allow all public servants, specifically educators, the right to unionize and bargain their rights to employment without any backlash.

Elections, Caucuses, and Campaign Finance

  • We support the expansion and protection of voting rights, in particular passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
  • We support the adoption of ranked-choice voting, multi-member districts, and proportional representation to strengthen our democracy and protect ourselves against hyperpartisanship.
  • We support a resolution that all candidates in the Democratic Party support HJR48, the We the People Act, which clarifies that Corporations are not people eligible for rights as listed in the Constitution and amendments and that money is not speech.
  • We call for the El Paso County Commissioners to adopt a fair and independent redistricting process. It should fully utilize an independent commission, include representation from all parts of the community, and be free of political gerrymandering.

Environment and Energy

  • We support the Climate Solutions Act of 2021.
  • We support State and federal bans on the sale, transport, and export of horses/equine for slaughter.
  • We support the protection of wild horses on public lands through the American Wild Horse Campaign.
  • We support protecting the lives of wild horses and burros by 1) outlawing helicopter roundups, 2) opposing the BLM’s plans to remove thousands of wild horses from public lands, which are their natural habitat, 3) maintaining enough ungelded stallions and young mare to breed sufficient numbers of foals to sustain the herds, and 4) making the adoption of wild horses and subsequent sales to kill auctions a criminal offense.
  • We support the banning of all PFAS in our state, including banning water poisoned with PFAS from being used in fracking.
  • We support allowing Title 32 special districts, General Improvement Districts, Business Improvement Districts, Urban Renewal Authorities, and Downtown Development Authorities to utilize their public financing powers to construct renewable energy improvements.
  • We support investigating whether Colorado has significant lithium or iron reserves so as to reduce this country’s dependence on foreign suppliers of critical metals.

Healthcare

  • We support Never Alone/No Patient Left Behind legislation, which will mandate that hospitals and healthcare institutions allow those who are chronically ill or on their deathbed access to in-person visitation.
  • We support the right to choose abortion to be codified into law.
  • We believe abortion should be prohibited beyond 22 weeks except to preserve the life of the mother.

Healthy Democracy

  • We oppose acts of the General Assembly designed to nullify, subvert, invert, confuse, or modify the meaning and intent of any statutory initiative or ballot question before Election Day.

Immigration

  • No County-Specific Immigration Planks

Labor

  • We support the right of workers to organize into unions and bargain collectively, including public sector workers at all levels of government if they choose to do so.
  • We support increasing the daily wage for incarcerated individuals to provide a means to attain a higher dollar amount available to the incarcerated individual upon release.
