State House District 14

Kat Gayle
Former Colorado Springs City Council Candidate
BA, cum laude; JD; Member of the Bars of Colorado, DC and Virginia; Member of the US District Court Bar (Colorado)

I am a nearly native Coloradan, growing up in Loveland. Most of my career, I worked internationally in Human Rights. I was the Senior Human Rights Advisor for USAID in Haiti.
I plan to advocate for individuals and communities’ rights in my home state as I have for the past three decades overseas.
I volunteered extensively in COS – CASA, D11’s Beyond the School Bell, Colorado Springs Youth Symphony, PPSCLC, ESL and Citizenship Instructor, Afghan Resettlement Project, and Westside Watch.

Democrat since 9/25/23
Alignment
Is there any aspect of the Colorado or El Paso County Democratic Party platforms that you do not agree or align with?

I am not sure about proportional representation as it could lead to giving a fringe party or person a disproportionate voice as does the electoral college. I do stridently support the right of all voices to be heard so long as they do not advocate for or cause harm. I am also unsure about a ban of ALL PFAS. I don’t know whether they have beneficial uses in medicine, etc. I do support regulation of disposal so they cannot continue to contaminate our soil and water.

Priorities
What single issue/problem/situation will you address first if elected and how will you do it in the context of the position you will serve in?

Smart Growth – addressing housing must consider changes in population demographics and universal design concepts. Infrastructure improvement and preparing for evacuation from natural disasters is imperative. Protecting neighborhoods and preventing displacement due to gentrification. Environmental impact including water, sustainability, wildlife corridors, etc. must all be considered.
