County Commissioner District 3
Hello. I’m Naomi López and I am proud to be the democrat running in this historic race for El Paso County Commissioner District 3. Our county has not had a Democrat elected to the County Commission for over 50 years. After redistricting efforts in 2023, CC3 is now a near-even, politically competitive district with a clear pathway forward for a Democrat to be elected to serve our community! My life’s journey, deeply rooted in service to community, has brought me to this exciting moment. I am an educator who has watched generations of educators in my family demonstrate the values of service, respect and collective growth. I have been a speech language pathologist in El Paso County for over 18 years, serving children and their families. I currently work with students in Colorado Springs School District 11. As a community organizer and education advocate, I’ve dedicated years to ensuring the future leaders of our community realize their best possible outcomes. I am an active leader in the Colorado Springs Education Association, and serve as the region rep for the CEA Equity Council for Race and Culture. I live near Mountain Shadows with my teenage daughter and our poodle, Vixen.
Is there any aspect of the Colorado or El Paso County Democratic Party platforms that you do not agree or align with?
There are no aspects of the Colorado or El Paso County Democratic Party platforms that I do not agree with. I am a life-long democrat who comes from a family of life-long democrats. I believe in the the democratic values of community-power and lateral leadership vs. status-power and top-down leadership.
What single issue/problem/situation will you address first if elected and how will you do it in the context of the position you will serve in?
Many do not realize the immense influence over our everyday lives that our elected county commissioners have. County Commissioners are the administrative body of the State and Federal Government, ensuring that all of our residents have access to government resources and funding that are being sent to us. Commissioners manage the county budget and appoint members to various public boards, such as the PPLD board. On Day 1, I will prioritize ensuring that El Paso County does not deny federal funding for infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and health and human services, as has been common practice by our current commissioners. By securing and properly managing these funds, I aim to enhance the quality of life for all residents, addressing essential needs and sustainable safety and infrastructure projects. I will also ensure that discussions and decisions are made during open meetings to increase public confidence that their concerns are properly being addressed.
