Congressional District 5

River Gassen - Congressional District 5
River is a first-time candidate
MPhys, UCCS

I’m River Gassen, running to represent Colorado’s 5th Congressional District. Growing up here, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges we face and the incredible potential we hold.

My campaign is built on a foundation of reproductive freedom, water conservation, healthcare access, and strong support for our military members and veterans. These are not just policy points—they’re personal commitments. I believe in a Colorado where women have the right to make their own healthcare decisions, where our water resources are protected and preserved for generations to come, where quality healthcare is accessible and affordable to all, and where our military members and veterans receive the necessary and comprehensive support for their service and sacrifices.

We’re at a crucial moment when new, educated, young leadership can make a difference. That leadership involves standing firm against MAGA extremism, exemplified by figures like Jeff Crank, and advocating for values representing our diverse and vibrant community. I’m here to listen, advocate, and fight for the values that unite us. Together, we can build a brighter future for CD-5.

I appreciate your support and look forward to working with you to create positive change. Let’s make Colorado a place where every community thrives.

Alignment
Is there any aspect of the Colorado or El Paso County Democratic Party platforms that you do not agree or align with?

No, I fully align with the Colorado and El Paso County Democratic Party platforms. These platforms reflect our shared values of equality, justice, and progress, focusing on key issues like reproductive freedom, environmental sustainability, and healthcare access. While there might be nuances in approach or emphasis, I believe in the core principles and goals outlined by our party. Political disagreement requires compromise in pluralistic societies. My commitment is to work collaboratively within these frameworks to advance our community’s interests and ensure a brighter future for all residents of CD-5.

Priorities
What single issue/problem/situation will you address first if elected and how will you do it in the context of the position you will serve in?

If elected, my first priority will be addressing the urgent need to reform the Supreme Court. Our checks and balances are under the greatest threat of my lifetime. Recent rulings, such as overturning the Chevron doctrine and granting the President near-total immunity from prosecution, highlight the dangerous direction Trump-appointed, MAGA justices are taking our country. To safeguard necessary change and uphold justice, I will work with my fellow members of Congress to ensure that we address the Supreme Court’s power grab and return to having a fair and balanced judiciary. This step is crucial to preserving our democracy and protecting the rights and freedoms of all Americans.
